Dear Great British Public

Please do not vote for the BNP. They look like used car salesmen, they have tippy tappy bits on their shoes and they are evil incarnate.

Well said Joella! We cannot be too vigilant where those despicable characters are concerned... those tippy-tappy bits are called 'segs' by the way, or at least they were among 12-year-old boys in Newcastle in the early 1980s, which is the last time I saw them. Come to think of it the kids wearing them at my school were probably trainee fascists...

Yes! Segs. That's the word I was looking for. Also found on the shoes of public schoolboys, but they tippy tap in a different way, somehow. I had some myself for a while when I was a child - I think it was my mum trying to keep my flat feet from wearing out my shoes so fast. I didn't tap so much as scrape, so that doesn't count.

This public schoolboy thought they were called blakeys. A self-important little prick of a prefect can make himself even more self-important by tippy tapping his way with short, rapid steps down a stone-floored corridor.
